I spent a couple of days over the last week fishing some small streams. It is a delight on a hot day to get in under the willows and vegetation out of the hot sun. Cool waters, lots of pools and plenty of small eager trout eating dry flies - and small nymphs if they won't eat them.
I fished one day with a 9 foot rod and it was a mistake. Lovely if there is open water and space to swing it, but under the trees a short rod is a huge advantage.
Second trip I took one of our Airflo 3 weight Apex combos. This rod is 7'6" and whilst only 18" shorter it makes a huge difference getting in under the shrubbery. Distance is not usually an issue in small streams, because it is better to sneak up, put in a short accurate cast and watch the fish eat your fly. I loaded the Apex up with a weight forward line, which loads quickly and roll casts superbly - even turning over a nymph under dry - or indicator easily.
If you want to have some fun grab one of these while they last. Rods are 4 piece and come with tube and a spare tip. Rods are just $349 or we will do as a combo with alloy Flylab reel, backing, leader and shipping for just $399. We only have a few so grab one and will Express Post it - ready to fish.
