Hi , the new Tasmanian trout season is just around the corner and the Inland Fisheries Service has been busy ensuring there are trout widely available for anglers.
Some stillwaters do not have natural spawning facilities and need replenishing from waters that have an abundance of trout.
Waters such as Four Springs and Penstock lagoons are two that have received strong numbers of fish again, but there are many others. A full list is in the attachment. Waters are listed alphabetically.
We spoke with IFS recently and there are still transfers going on - especially from the Derwent River trap at Lake King William.
Must have flies for the Season Start
|
These are pretty much the 'Must haves' for the start of the season. Humungous, Shrek and Magoo will serve you well at any water. In fact you could tie all three on five feet apart and not change them.
It won't matter too much which water you fish from Curries River Dam (well stocked), to Four Springs, Woods Lake, Penstock Lagoon or Little Pine.
Don't forget the huge trophies that can be caught at the lake of a thousand casts - Lake Crescent.
A kit of sinking lines from Intermediate sink to sink 5 will be a useful addition as will a good strong 10 foot rod.
Wherever you fish we wish you luck and tight lines.
Don't forget to replace your tippet and leaders. It does deteriorate and who wants to lose that big fish?

Anglers rejoice - Sage's NEW TROUT LL
|
|
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. (June 12, 2019) – Sage nods to tradition yet improves performance with the introduction of the TROUT LL fly rod family. Through blank taper optimization and specialized length offerings, the TROUT LL is perfected for wade fishing, closer casts, small flies, and light tippets.
“KonneticHD technology allows us to design this rod to have a supple tip to maximize tippet protection yet have a smooth, easy-loading mid-section to increase feel and feedback throughout the casting stroke,” said Peter Knox, Sage R&D design engineer. “The TROUT LL’s delicate touch and medium action is a dry fly anglers dream.”
The TROUT LL’s classic appearance starts with the mahogany blank highlighted with bronze primary thread wraps and gold trim wraps. Each model has Fuji ceramic stripper guides and the hard-chromed snake guides and tip-tops. A walnut wood insert with bronze up-locking reel seat pair nicely with the super plus, snub-nose, half-wells cork handle. Each rod comes in a tan rod bag with brown logo in a brown powder-coated aluminum rod tube. The TROUT LL is available from 3 through 6-weights in lengths
ranging from 7’9” to 9’ and each model will retail for $1185.
All models will become available August 2019, but we have a couple left from our first shipment which arrives in the next few days: #4 x 9' and #5 x 9'.

Sage X Tactical Green - Limited numbers
|
The Tactical Green Sage X is just a different incarnation of an outstanding rod. Who would have thought changing just the colour would make so much difference. Well it does. We actually have a couple of customers that take to their new glossy rods with superfine wet and dry to take the gloss off them. They wear camo clothing and want to get that little extra advantage over other anglers. Does it make a
difference? Maybe.
Anyway the queue for a dull finish Sage is strong and whilst we ordered many we only have one or two 9' #5 weights left. We are getting more, but please call if you want one.

Can't get out? Try an indoor practice rod.
|
Peter Hayes once asked Joan Wulff (who is one of the most experienced teachers of casting in the world) what she considered was the most valuable aid to teaching casting. She didn't hesitate. 'The indoor rods are the most wonderful teaching tool we have Peter' she said.
Well designed Indoor Practice Rod casts and load just like a regular rod and come in two pieces. Packaged in a handy plastic carry tube around 680mm long you can take them anywhere.
By regularly using this fun casting aid you will dramatically improve almost every aspect of your casting stroke.
Learn to throw tight, narrow loops with good line speed. Improve accuracy by developing greater hand eye coordination in the comfort of your lounge room.
The indoor rod is the perfect tool for learning all the presentation casts including the curve and aerial mend casts that are so necessary for successful river fishing.
You can even learn roll casting on carpet and be amazed at how competent you become at this.
These rods make the ideal gift for every fisherman. Every fly fisherman that wants to improve their cast should have one at home and another in the office. They are also perfect for introducing your children to fly casting.

Airflo 10' #6 weight rod and reel: Was $465 now $295 or $265 for rod only
|
The Airflo Blade series is a lightweight, fast action, high modulus weapon that is finished with high end componentry that you would normally find on a $1,000 rod.
It is an outstanding rod on its own, but a perfect 'Extra' rod to have in the boat with either a different line or different setup - ready to go. without changing everything over.
The stability and power of the rod enables tight loops and an action that will work for you from short to very long ranges - depending on the line you use.
The Blade 10' #6 is one of the few rods where you can power out the whole 90' line.
This is an incredible rod for sinking lines fished from a boat.
Australian Champion Jon Stagg has this to say:
"I recently had the opportunity to try the Airflo 10 foot 6# Blade fly rod. My first impression was it certainly felt nice in the hand, had good fittings, was quite light but I also felt the power straight away. I decided to give it a try on a local water that holds some big strong rainbows where it would certainly be put through its paces. As a fishing rod it certainly is powerful, it handles playing fish well and loves to cast a long line so for boat fishing it is ideal. It may not become
my favourite dry fly rod but with sinking lines it excels and will belt out long smooth casts effortlessly over and over again. This rod is excellent value for money and I would highly recommend it for any wet fly fishing from a boat."
Regards, JON STAGG
We like this rod with a RIO Grande, SA MPX or the new Airflo DASH would also be great. All these have an aggressive and overweight head that this rod handles easily - especially turning over big or several flies.
It is incredible how much difference a 10' rod makes in a boat or mending line on a large stream or river. You will have better control, the ability to lift a lot of line off the water and to power out huge casts. A spare tip is included with these rods, but they are also backed up by Manic’s Quick Fix Airflo warranty as well.

High N Dry floatants - possibly the best ever, and environmentally friendly.

High N Dry Floatants
High N Dry is the most advanced, highest performing, solvent free floatants available.
The Company is made up of people who love fly-fishing and the outdoors, and also a great respect for our natural world.
Founding members, Vince, Dennis, and Ken, had know each other for years, but worked for different companies. They were brought together each year by a supplier to fly fish industry and became great friends and High N Dry Products was born.
Two of the founding team were brilliant chemists with over 100 U.S. patents.
Gel Floatant
Gel floatant is designed specifically to dress their flies with their fingers. This floatant works well on all flies, including those tied with CDC materials. Field and lab tests show it to be the best performing floatant available and it is not flammable, it contains no organic solvents, 100% solids and is environmentally friendly.
Liquid Floatant
Perfect for fly-fishers that prefer to dip their fly into a container. This is fast and allows the fly to be completely covered with a barrier that keeps moisture out. It works well on flies tied with all types of materials and is especially effective to float large Stimulators and Hoppers tied with foam. Our field and lab tests show it to be the best performing floatant available and it is not flammable and it contains no organic solvents, 100% solids and is environmentally friendly.
Powdered Desiccant
Powdered floatant and desiccant was designed to compliment the Gel and Liquid floatants. Eventually your flies will become water-logged, or slimed by a great fish. This product is terrific for those fly-fishers that prefer a shake and dry floatant, but can also be used to revive that drowned fly and then refloated with our Gel or Liquid Floatants. Our field and lab tests show it to be the best performing floatant available and it is not flammable and it contains no organic solvents, 100% solids and is
environmentally friendly.
Desiccant with Brush
Amazing floatant delivers a very fine and even coating of water repelling particles. The coating is so fine it is almost invisible! The floatant also helps trap air and improve buoyancy so it is useful for both dry flies and nymphs. Our advanced formula utilizes nanoparticle technology in conjunction with hydrophobic (water hating) chemistry for unrivaled waterproofing performance.
