This would be a great spare rod for the boat or for hurling flies long distances.

It is an excellent rod for shore or a boat. We cast a full line in our car/casting park and found it had heaps of power.
The extra length gives you great control and makes lifting long lines easy. It has a sensitive tip, loads quickly on short casts, and protects the tippet when playing fish. The power in the bottom end makes long casts and playing fish a breeze. It has a spare tip and also an extension piece to make it a 10' rod. We don't think the extension enhances the rod, but it could be useful from a boat. It is not the lightest rod in the
shop, but it is robust and will be a great addition to the quiver.
